Belonging within the community.

In 2021, 23% of Latino Spanish speakers reported being criticized for speaking Spanish in public, and 20% of all Latinos said they were called offensive names in the past year. These incidents were perpetrated by both non-Latinos and fellow Latinos.

Cultural identity and belonging

Research shows that about 24% of Latino adults in the U.S. are not proficient in Spanish, partly due to historical anti-Latino discrimination. This has given rise to the 'No Sabo' generation, referring to individuals who, because of assimilation pressures and past discriminatory practices, are disconnected from their linguistic heritage.
