00:03 patriotism there's a word thrown around 00:06 a lot and as far as passionate debate 00:09 it's more like a badge of honor and with 00:10 good reason because it means love and 00:13 devotion for one's country love for word 00:17 designed to unite it can also be pretty 00:19 divisive see there's more to patriotism 00:21 flag sequins onesies and rodeos and 00:24 quadruple cheeseburgers patriotism is 00:27 love for a country not just pride in it 00:31 but what really makes up this country of 00:33 ours what is it we love it's more than 00:36 just a huge rock full of animals like 00:38 Cougars and eagles right it's the people 00:41 do me a favor close your eyes for a 00:45 second I want to try something picture 00:48 the average US is think about how old 00:52 are they 00:52 what's the hair like how much can they 00:55 bench you got one 00:57 okay so chances are the person you're 01:01 picturing right now looks a little 01:03 different the real average American 01:05 they're 319 million u.s. citizens 51% 01:10 are female so first off the average 01:13 American is a woman cool huh 01:15 is that what you pictured 54 million or 01:18 Latino 40 million senior citizens 27 01:21 million are disabled 18 million age 01:23 that's more people in the US than play 01:25 football and baseball combined nine 01:29 million are lesbian gay bi transgender 01:31 more than the entire amount of people 01:33 who live in the state of Virginia around 01:35 10 million a redhead 5.1 million play 01:38 Ultimate Frisbee three and a half 01:39 million are Muslim Tripp the number of 01:43 people currently serving in the United 01:45 States military almost half the country 01:47 belongs to minority groups people who 01:49 are lesbian african-american and bi and 01:52 transgender and Native American and 01:54 proud of it we know that labels don't 01:57 devalue us they help define us keeping 02:00 us dialed into our cultures and our 02:01 beliefs and who we are as Americans 02:04 after all what's more American 02:06 freedom to celebrate the things that 02:08 make us us I mean it's stitched into the 02:11 Stars and Stripes of this country from 02:13 the Constitution to Gettysburg to our 02:15 motto e pluribus unum from many one even 02:20 in our country's name the United States 02:23 this year patriotism shouldn't just be 02:27 about pride of country it should be 02:29 about love love beyond age disability 02:32 sexuality race religion in any other 02:35 labels because the second any of us 02:37 judge people based on those labels we're 02:39 not really being patriotic are we so 02:42 let's try this one more time close your 02:44 eyes picture the average Joe or Joan or 02:48 Juan or jean-luc the real people make 02:54 America America 02:56 this year whenever you feel the urge to 02:58 down those star-spangled shorts set off 03:00 fireworks the size of my biceps show 03:02 love for our country remember that the 03:05 love America is to love all America's 03:08 because love has no ladies 03:15 [Music]
